Mud and Gelato

One of the better ways to celebrate Earth Day, is to be covered in mud! Mud runs with variables meant to test physical, mental, and social strength have become a fitness trend across the nation. The Citadel's 17th annual Bulldog Challenge this Saturday, April 20, 2013 is the ultimate endurance course featuring The Lowcountry's pluff mud or "life draining marsh" as it is referred to on the challenge official website. Pino Gelato is proud to be on board as a sponsor of The Bulldog Challenge hosted by The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Bulldog Challenge is self described as a grueling six mile (10k)endurance course that will push a competitor and their three team mates to the limit with obstacles encountered throughout meant to cause "friction" to those daring to compete. Previous course involvement has boasted a USMC rope climb, carrying 25 lb sand bags through pluff mud, and wrestling of giant truck tires. With The Citadel, known as The Military College of South Carolina, playing host to the event participants should expect the extreme (one obstacle is dubbed "The House of Pain") as far as difficulty. Luckily, the enrolled and truly brave, Citadel Marines and NROTC cadets are on course for encouragement along the way.

Bulldog Challenge competitors!

The Bulldog Challenge has grown in popularity with national awareness attracting 724 competitors to last year's event, this Saturday's event is likely to surpass that number according to The Citadel. The growing attendance and attention is welcomed with the clause of the race proceeds raising a donation to Semper Fi Society Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to a participating member of the society enrolled in NROTC and working toward a commission in the United States Marine Corps.
Ready to Scoop this Saturday!

Mud runs certainly engage contestants with Earth and are widely used as recreation to commemorate Earth Day. Beyond the climate of race day, even beyond the mud, is a celebration of community and encouragement played out with prizes given by numerous sponsors and donations. To sweeten the finish line Pino Gelato will be at The Bulldog Challenge with our gelato cart Scooping Happiness to participants as they breathe in relief after completing the grueling course.

Yes, join this military style mud run or perhaps spectator at this event whilst consuming gelato and engage in another activity in spirit of Earth Day, say by planting a small tree.

Italian Heritage Festival

Ciao! (Hello!)

Come stai?(How are you?)

Last Saturday, the Italian American Club of Hilton Head orchestrated their 2nd Italian Heritage Festival at Shelter Cove Community Park.
All the ingredients for a great events were there: the weather was perfect (a bit warm according to some, but it is never too warm if you ask us!), the food was amazing and the turn out even better!

More than 2,000 people joined us to savor Italian food offered by many local restaurants and shops. name your favorite food, I bet it was there:  Italian sausage, pasta and meatballs, osso bucco, polenta, and of course pizza! If you were smart, you saved room for dessert, not only for gelato but also cannolis and the famous Zeppoli's prepared from scratch by the Club's volunteers.

Between the music, the sun, the delicious smell of all the different dishes, the loud Italian families and the laughters, we sure felt a little closer to Italy that day...

Pets on The Promenade

Last Saturday turned out to be the perfect day for Pets on the Promenade in Bluffton, South Carolina because it was a bit overcast and thus not too hot to have the cats and dogs outside.

This annual event aims at promoting adoption of homeless pets and it worked: 8 dogs went home with their new family!!

"Ruff life"!
Love that shot
Many local animal shelters and rescue groups were present, along with main sponsor Hilton Head Monthly and pet-friendly vendors to help raise funds for the Hilton Head Humane Association and Palmetto Animal League.

Making sure the gelato is ready!

Pino Gelato set up its portable shop on the promenade to offer gelato and sorbetto for donations . It turns out not only humans but also dogs love a cold treat!

"Lemon" enjoyed some Limoncello sorbetto

Local author Julie Chalpan
Add some live music by the Beagles, covering songs from the Beatles, a silent auction full of great items and gift certificates, "Titan's Tale" book signing by local author Julie Chalpan and that's all you need for an afternoon of fun and relaxing time!

Already looking forward to next year's Pets on The Promenade... woof!

AOL Travel Editors’ Picks for Best Hilton Head Island Restaurants

We were pleasantly surprised to learn that Pino Gelato was listed in the Best Hilton Head Island Restaurants by AOL Travel. We were interviewed and photographed last year by a representative from AOL who visited the shop and spoke to owner, Ramona Fantini. He told us that we came highly recommended, hence the reason for the visit.

Pino Gelato appears on the AOL link entitled “Hilton Head Itineraries”  . The list encompasses many other popular eateries, local and tourist favorites, and we are very proud to be recognized. The article is intended to be a guide for a potential traveler to the island, opening with a day by day list for the reader to follow, as they are enticed to each suggested destination. Pino Gelato is listed on Day 5, with the suggestion to have a wonderful blueberry pomegranate sorbetto cone. Great choice AND the sorbetto is 100 % fat free!  The reader can click further into each destination to get more information and some photos; the photo of our shop is warm and inviting. AOL mentions our other products, crepes and pizza in a cone, and of course our handmade and decorated gelato cakes. The piece de resistance is the link to our website and our place among the Best Hilton Head Island Restaurants!
