The Gelato Sandwich

A bevy of delightful images of frozen desserts splashed across the internet last week in celebration of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day on August 2, 2013.  Frozen desserts and the stream of National Days allotted in their honor represent summer treats well.  The sources for inspiration are mouthwatering creative combinations.  After a particularly long period of pontificating the very best way to stand out among the slew of combinations the answer became simple, creating a basic gelato sandwich proved enough to contend.

The Gelato Sandwich:
Chocolate wafer cookies, vanilla gelato. Simple summer treasure.
On a previous post the idea occurred to make a gelato sandwich with pizzelle, delicious and a bit fancy.  For numerous variations gelato can be smashed in between to enjoy sandwich style (donuts, waffles) check out this buzzfeed. This video supplies you with the proper techniques on how-to create the gelato sandwich!

The Blood Orange Peach Soda Float
Recipe adapted from Giada De Laurentiis.

Same buzz, same theory here.  Able to stem a bit from the basic being as the frozen beverage arena has many advanced conceptions. Please don't take this the wrong way, black sesame gelato shakes are likely amazing, but this fresh sorbetto soda float will cater nicely to summer taste buds.

The Blood Orange Peach Soda Float
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
3 fresh peaches, peeled and pitted
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, from 1-2 large lemons
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 cup sparkling water
Ice
Blood Orange sorbetto
Basil for garnish

In a small saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved, 2-3 minutes.  Set aside to cool 20 minutes.
In a blender, combine the cooled syrup, peaches, lemon juice, and lemon zest.  Blend until smooth.  Add the sparkling water and pour into an ice filled pitcher.  To serve pour into individual glasses and top with a scoop of blood orange sorbetto and fresh basil for garnish.

Do you know what today is? Yes, another frozen treat: National Root Beer Float Day! Root beer & Sea Salt Caramel Gelato for our float!

One… Two… THREE Scoops for You!

It was a bright sunny day on Hilton Head Island, and as we were helping our customers and admiring the beautiful day at the Pino Gelato store in Wexford Plaza, someone exclaimed,

“It’s a bird!”

“It’s a plane!”

“No, it’s a home run!!!”

Suddenly the doors BURST open and in came the joyous stampede of the Tigers baseball team!
The proud pride of young Tigers, ages 8 to 10, crowded around the oasis of frozen dessert, a delicious and well earned treat for their outstanding season.

Chocolate!
Vanilla!
Pistachio!
Stracciatella (Chocolate Chip)!
Fragola (Strawberry)!
Mixed berry!
Lemon sorbet!
Blood orange sorbet!

 There were so many choices!

As they waited for their gelato and mouth-watering pepperoni or cheese pizza cones, the Tigers showed us their overjoyed faces with their Tiger stripes.

Through the many days of storms and sunshine, this team had become a community and covered each other’s back like a true pride.

Finishing with a record of 7 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie, they were “Kings of the League.” Among the pride were their team captains Colin Gross and Dillan Montenegro. The victorious team was managed by Tim Gross and assisted by coaches Mark Boyer and Michael Methvin.

The young players gained a great deal of valuable experience and wisdom from their coaches. It was also time for this young warrior’s hot flavorful pizza cone to be devoured.

While one player was talking with the coach, this Tiger had taken a moment to observe the celebration and reflect on a great season. This moment didn’t last too long…

And neither did the steamy pizza cone.

Congratulations to the Tigers for a terrific season! We are so grateful to have you as a part of our community!

Come celebrate and share your “home runs” at Pino Gelato:
a community of friends, family, and gelato!

AOL Travel Editors’ Picks for Best Hilton Head Island Restaurants

We were pleasantly surprised to learn that Pino Gelato was listed in the Best Hilton Head Island Restaurants by AOL Travel. We were interviewed and photographed last year by a representative from AOL who visited the shop and spoke to owner, Ramona Fantini. He told us that we came highly recommended, hence the reason for the visit.

Pino Gelato appears on the AOL link entitled “Hilton Head Itineraries”  . The list encompasses many other popular eateries, local and tourist favorites, and we are very proud to be recognized. The article is intended to be a guide for a potential traveler to the island, opening with a day by day list for the reader to follow, as they are enticed to each suggested destination. Pino Gelato is listed on Day 5, with the suggestion to have a wonderful blueberry pomegranate sorbetto cone. Great choice AND the sorbetto is 100 % fat free!  The reader can click further into each destination to get more information and some photos; the photo of our shop is warm and inviting. AOL mentions our other products, crepes and pizza in a cone, and of course our handmade and decorated gelato cakes. The piece de resistance is the link to our website and our place among the Best Hilton Head Island Restaurants!
