A Distinctive Spoon

Take a moment to look around and see the variety of dishes we for different foods and meals.

When you take a step back, it’s amazing how many different types of dishes we use to serve food. All of these specific materials were created for their own purpose, and over time, the use of them has become a tradition that can demonstrate the evolution and history of food.

Plastic-ware for picnics
Fine china for special occasions
Salad forks
Soup spoons
Espresso shot glasses

Did you ever notice that the spoons in those bowls used at gelaterias, like Pino Gelato, are atypical?

These fascinating little spoons are called palettinas and are a part of the tradition of eating gelato. They are smaller than our normal dinner spoons which allows you to enjoy every moment of your gelato rather than rushing through the pleasurable taste. Allow this little spoon to help you cleanse your palette with full bursts of gelato. In addition, their square shape makes them stand out from other desserts and adds the international flair to parties.

Here is a supplier of the little palettinas.

The Green Scoop

You know what I’m talking about.

So sweet…

So refreshing…

So green…

I’m talking about my favorite flavor of gelato - Mint Chocolate Chip! I must say that it is a delectable choice for a pleasant winter day. Sitting on a plaza or park bench with a charming little dish of Italian dessert paradise. Enjoying the relaxing moment of life and allowing the gelato to cleanse the palette and soul… sigh.

Whoa…! Sorry about the daydream… back to blogging!

Well, as much as I do love my mint chip gelato (and I do!), there is something else that I have been wanting to share with you.

Do you know what else is sweet, refreshing, and green?

Actively taking care of the environment everyday.

Last month, we shared with you many of things we are doing at Pino Gelato to help take care of the environment so we can all continue to enjoy life on this beautiful planet. If you didn’t have a chance to read it, scroll down a bit to January 20th and see what kinds of actions we are taking!

We want you to be a part of our eco-friendly family of gelatorians! Come into Pino Gelato and share the things you have done over the past month to change your impact on the world.

If you didn’t have a chance to change anything in busy-busy January, don’t lose your chocolate chips. You can still do something! After googleing and facebooking, like many of us do on the weekends, we noticed that this week is the Random Acts of Kindness Week. What a perfect time to make a difference?!

We challenge you to dedicate this week to making at least one change in your life that can support the environment!

When you have done that random act of kindness for the earth, then act kindly toward your community and society by posting that idea here on the blog, on our face book page, and/or tell your friends about it!

As individuals, we may not feel like we can make a difference, but we are all a part of a giant green scoop of difference. You are the chocolate chips that make that mint gelato so sweet and worth changing for.

Take a moment today to come to Pino Gelato and start making a difference!

Change YOUR world, one scoop at a time!

Hello Gelatorians!

First of all, have you celebrated your new year's resolution success with a little gelato or espresso at Pino Gelato yet? You could even have some as a little pick-me-up to get you going again. :)
Remember at the beginning of January when we shared the Corners of 4 with you and explained that we are looking to help you with your resolutions… and we weren’t joking!

Here we are making a statement!

As the world is changing, both in our communities and on a larger scale, we recognize that people around the globe are making a difference by being aware of their actions and how they affect the environment. At Pino Gelato, we know we can either harm ecosystems or make a choice to positively support the environment. We are consciously making the decision everyday to be friends of the environment, and we invite YOU to change with us!

When you support Pino Gelato, you can rest assured that your delicious gelato is part of the “going green” process. We are:

Switching to biodegradable cups

Utilizing biodegradable trash can liners

Switching to biodegradable napkins and paper towels

Switching to-go pints and quarts containers to biodegradable ones
Here are some more easy but significant changes we have made that you can also do!

Replacing the fluorescent bulbs with LED (Low Emitting Diode) lights

Recycling all plastic packaging

Recycling all corrugated cardboard boxes

Participating in Palmetto Electric's Green Power initiative to purchase electricity generated by renewable resources
                - For those outside of HHI, call or message your electric company and encourage them to purchase “green power”

We invite you to implement a few of these ideas in your home, and we’ll check on you in a couple of weeks to see how you are doing.

Consider this:

Pino Gelato's New Scoop

Happy New Year my fellow Gelatorians!!!

We are almost a week into the new year, and we hope your New Year’s Resolutions are going strong. Our resolution for this year is to help you succeed in yours and to share your stories and experiences of Pino Gelato. To give you the extra boost of support since you have supported us, we are introducing the Corners of 4! They are significant pieces that make up a harmonious Pino Gelato experience.

Community - one big family of gelatorians (gelato lovers) and outreach
Environment - helping to protect the planet
Italy - origins of gelato
Gelato - shocking, we know

The Corners of 4 is like a delicious Italian pizza, complete with sauce, cheese, and toppings that rest on a whole-wheat foundation named Pino Gelato. By the end of each month, you‘ll experience the whole pizza. Each week, we will serve you a different slice of the Corners of 4 here with your experiences, events at Pino Gelato, and a few other things up our toques (chef’s hat).

Now, back to those New Year’s Resolutions. Pino Gelato is ready to help on what we hear as one of the most common resolutions….

Every year, we hear people deciding that it’s time to get in better shape (which is fantastic!), and it tends to include exercising more and eating better/giving up desserts (that’s where it goes downhill). Who wants to give up their craving for sweets?! Not I, says the blogger.

This year, that is going to change for you with gelato! Gelato is a different kind of dessert that you don‘t have to give up. This delectable dessert consists of all natural ingredients that give it a rich, mouth-watering, full bodied flavor. The best part of all for your resolution: 93% fat free!!! It is made with milk instead of cream which allows it to be so much better for you than ice cream and other desserts! If you need something dairy free or just desire something different, try our soy-based gelato or sorbets. After savoring every bite at Pino Gelato, your cravings will be fulfilled, and you will feel great because you know that you chose a healthy treat.

Allow yourself to be healthier this year and celebrate with a scoop of gelato!

Happy Anniversary to Pino Gelato Cafe in Cranberry Twp, PA!

You may have noticed that we often use the term "family" at Pino Gelato. Well, family did play a key role for Ron and Kim Kachman, who now owns the Pino Gelato Cafe in Cranberry township, Pennsylvania. While on a family vacation on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, one of their family member discovered Pino Gelato and introduced our gelato and concept to Ron and Kim. Then, they visited our corporate retail store in The Village at Wexford, met with John Jacobs and Ramona Fantini, and the rest was history.

A few month later, Dominic Leong was in Cranberry Twp, training a dozen college and high schools students who would work along side with Ron and Kim to bring the genuine taste of Italy to this great area, near Pittsburgh, PA. Ron and Kim invited friends and family to experience Pino Gelato and discover their new location in the Oak Tree Place shopping center on the night before the Grand Opening. The fun began when more than 50 VIP guests strolled through the cafe and tasted Pino gelato and sorbetto for the first time.

Since each Pino Gelato license is individually owned, Ron and Kim envisioned this full menu European style cafe, where patrons are served not only authentic gelato and sorbetto, but also a wide assortment of pastries and bakery goods. Customers need a little time to choose among the selection of soups and sandwiches on their lunch break. One may stop by anytime for a cold refreshment or hot beverage, even though it is hard to decide between the various specialty coffee drinks, hot chocolate, and chai teas.

Ron and Kim just celebrated their 6-month anniversary and launched new Italian-style sandwiches. And that did not go unnoticed, as national website RestaurantNews.com featured Pino Gelato cafe last week!

So, congratulations to Ron and Kim and thank you to all of our loyal and new customers!

Congratulazioni!
